A Gude Cause – Women, Peace and Scottish Politics
Friday 21 August 2009
October 1909 witnessed a ‘grand pageant’ for women’s suffrage, in Edinburgh’s Princes Street. With reduced female representation in the Scottish Parliament,
Gude Cause has been formed to re-enact the event and inspire renewed action
for gender equality. Here an expert panel discuss how devolution can continue to
improve the position of Scottish women, and bring less confrontational politics, as
favoured by early suffragists such as Chrystal McMillan.
17.30 Committee Room 1, Scottish Parliament. FREE but ticketed (book in advance through www.hubtickets.co.uk)

Free Screening - Feminist Oral History Spanish Civil War Film
Sunday 09 August 2009
This Sunday 09/80 there will be a showing of De Toda la Vida (All Our Lives). A film about feminists in the Spanish Civil War and social revolution.
In July 1936 an attempted coup d’etat by nationalist military forces threw Spain into bitter civil war. In the midst of this civil war the most ambitious social experiment the world has ever seen took place. The Spanish revolution saw workers seize control of their lives under the red and black banner of liberty. Despite the liberatory nature of the revolution sexism was still rife within Spanish culture, even the most revolutionary sections of it. To counter this the Anarcha-Feminist group the Mujeres Libres(Free Women) was formed. This film , made in1987, is a series of interviews with surviving members of the group. An important oral history of an inspiring group of anarchist women. This film will feature an introduction into the historical circumstances of the civil war, and the need for the formation of the Free Women. The film will be followed by a discussion about Anarcha-Feminism.
